Save Time and Frustration with Time-Saving Security Tips from HiWired

NEEDHAM, Mass. – January 2, 2007 – HiWired, Inc. (www.hiwired.com), a provider of services and support that helps consumers and small businesses utilize, enjoy and integrate their technology, today announced five time-saving security tips to help consumers better leverage their technology in 2007.

“Technology is a pervasive part of our lives,” said Singu Srinivas, President of HiWired. “From blogging—to home-created videos—to digital music libraries, we are using technology in ways many of us never expected. We talk, play, listen, shop and communicate online. But, technology is not always intuitive and malicious attackers look for any opportunity. And, as a result, we spend too much time recovering from the havoc that online intruders bring. Better to take proactive action that prevents problems saving your time for more important activities.”

HiWired has assembled these five security-oriented tips to keep consumers using their technology, instead of trying to repair it. As 2007 begins, preventative actions such as these could help ward off issues, and save consumers time over the long run.

1. Triple Protect
Anti-virus software is not enough. You also need to have anti-spyware and firewall software. And, keep software updated by installing security patches that prevent attacks through known vulnerabilities.

2. Read the Fine Print
Read User Agreements for software, especially if the software is free. Adware and spyware could be bundled into the software. Studies show that 75% of home computers have some virus, spyware or adware on them.

3. Not Every Joke or Attachment is Safe
Email is the #1 source for unwanted viruses, worms and Trojan horses. Never, ever open up attachments if they look odd or you don’t recognize the email address.

4. Beware of Strangers
Hackers are known to “war drive,” looking for unsecured, unencrypted wireless networks to break into. Make sure your network is protected, and when you’re not online disconnect from the Internet, reducing the chance of exposure to an attacker.

5. Keep it Private
Never reveal personal or financial information in an email, and never respond to emails asking for such information. Go directly to the companies official website or call the company to verify the need and use of sensitive information.
